Veratrum californicum pararde

Amy Mc Kinney, a Post Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Maryland and at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, Colorado, took the above photograph at the 2010 4th of July parade in Crested Butte. Amy told me, "There is an 8 mile race in the morning, starting at the lab and winding down to the end in Crested Butte. This is called the Gothic Marathon, even though it is not 26.2 miles. The parade follows, and as you can see, people are generally hot from the run and wear their Veratrum costumes with not much else underneath. I am uncertain how this tradition started, but it is a long-standing one. I know David Inouye [Professor of Biology at the U. of Maryland and at the RMBL] has been participating (he walks on stilts in the parade) since he started going to the RMBL in the 70s".
