leptotes (Delicate Townsendia)
Asteraceae (Sunflower Family)
Foothills to alpine. Woodlands, openings.
The massive flowering of Townsendia leptotes shown in the top photograph is the norm. Often the flowers are so thick that one must poke through them to even see the basal mound of leaves.
In the second photograph, Townsendia leptotes and Astragalus missouriensis combine to make a spectacular show.
The photograph immediately above shows about two percent of an extensive display of Townsendia leptotes along the roadside just west of the entrance to Lone Mesa State Park. This display is certainly the largest by far of any Townsendia growth that I have ever seen, and it is fairly consistent from year to year in this spot and in a number of other areas along the same road.
